Beware of potential Xmas safety hazards

CHRISTMAS IS a time of great
excitement for children, but it is
also a time: of potential safety
hazards that all) parents should
know about.

Plants such as poinsestia, holly,
and mistletoe are potentially
poisonous,

Children who accidentally put
Poinsettia leaves in their mouths
risk a burning sensation in’ the
mouth, swollen lips and tongue,
and also dermatitis from touching
the plant.

if a child has eaten hollyberries,
20 to 30 are considered toxic and
can cause severe gastrointestinal
irritation

The mistltee can also cause
vomiting and diarrhea if placed in
the mouth,

If an accident occurs, phone the
Poison Control Centre at 682-
5050. These plants should be kept
out of reach of children.

Never teave a sinall child or
baby unattended in a room with fit
candies, a burning fireplace, or
lights on the Christmas tree.

Remember too that bite-size ap-
petizers such as peanuts are chek-
ing hazards to small children.

Also, leftover alcohol in glasses
and cigarette butts in ashtrays are
dangerous.
