Montessori
elementary
set for fall

’ THE North Shore will get

’ its first Montessori ele-
mentary school in Sept-
ember.

A total of 15 students have
signed up for kindergarten and
Grade | at North Star Montes-
sori Elementary School in
North Vancouver.

the Montessori approach rec-
ognizes a child’s desire to
leam.,

“The whole approach

According to a school
pamphlet, the goal of
Montessori is to teach a chiid
how to learn and think.

The child is given freedom
within a structured environ-
ment, /

The’ teacher directs chil-
dren “individually towards
what they are most ready for at
their. individual stages of
development.

“This approach — fosters
independent, self-motivated,
goal-directed children. And
because the children are treat-
-ed as individuals, with respect,
they learn to respect them-
selves and each other. This
also leads to better self-esteem
for the children,” continued
the pamphiet.

For parents, the Montessori
elementary school provides
control over student-teacher
ratios, freedom. from school
bureaucracies and a say in cur-
riculum, said Lanziner.

“We don’t have to worry
about funding being dropped
for music or whatever,” he
said,

at a Montessori preschool.

preschoolers looked at alterna-
lives for their children’s future
schooling.

They wanted to keep their
children in Montessori, but
there wasn’t a Montessuri ele-
mentary school on the North
Shore.

Now, parents plan a
to Grade 2
school the first year, with
grades being added each year
up to Grade 7. With eight
Montessori preschools oa the
North Shore, Lanziner expects
a good base of support for the
school. -

The school will use the
British Columbia Cuniculum
Guide as the minimum stan-
dard and enrich the program
with French, physical educa-
tion, music and art.

A non-profit society run by
a parent advisory board will
operate the school.

years, Tuition fees of $3,650 a
year will be charged.
