MY PARENTS are avid envi-
ronmentalists, and they have
continually drilled the idea
into my head, that cars are
bad for the environment.

L agree. However, I have recently
acquired my driver's licence and. of
course, the question to my parents
everyday is, “When can I buy a
car?”

Hence my dilemma. All { want is
to have quick, private transportation
and also be able to rofl around the
town for fun. As a society we are
extremely reliant on our cars and
don’t see — or more importantly,
don’t want to see — that they are

bud for the environment, We drive
our four-wheeled polluters in denial
that they are causing any damage.
Guess What? They are.

Without a car, how can people
get to work? “Take the bus or ride
your bike.” is the common response.

For me, however, this is not nec-
essarily the answer. How many times
have you been caught outside in
rainy or fieezing weather waiting for
the 52-window loser-cruiser?

I many sound like a spoiled brat.
but I have personally waited outside
every day this winter for the bus.
Most buses run every half hour, and
sometimes every 15 minutes in rush
hour. Sometimes they ure five min-
utes late and this blows all my con-

_ nections.

And not everyone can ride a bike
to and from work everyday. The

-elderly for example, don't have the

physical endurance. Also, many
workers miust curry materials to and
from work.

“Why don’t walk?" you may
ask. School is a long ways from
home, and work is even further.

So, I need a car. Mast of us need
cars. What { would like to see is a
form of private wansportation that is
not bad for the environment. We
have the technology to accomplish
this. { have heard of cars that run off
organic wastes, such as old banana
