GM unveil Ss new vehicles for 1995 David Chao OVERDRIVE THINGS DIDN'T iook too bright for General Motors one year ago as the automak- ers competitors were intro- ducing new vehicles left and right, while it sat quietly wait- ing ior its engineers to put the finishing touches on the yet- to-come new products. Now that much of the hard work is done, GM is ready to put pressure on the American, Japanese, and European competitors with an arse- . nal of new cars and trucks designed to gain a foothold in virtually all market segments. Indeed, the 1995 model year is going to be one cf the busiest years GM has ever experi- enced, GM started its new car launch in early summer with the debut of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo — a contem- porary two-door persona! luxury coupe designed to compete with the likes of the Ford Thunderbird and Honda Accord coupe. The Monte Carlo is based on the totally re-engi- neered Chevy Lumina sedan, which arrived shortly after the Monte’s intro. Following the Lumina’s steps is Chevy’s compact-sized Cavalier — a car that has outsold every other car in Canada for the past four years. The new Cavalier arrives at the deal- erships with extensively reworked and refined chassis, wrapped inside acompletely redesigned ay-. exterior/interior, which by the way looks handsome and functionai. Available in both four-door and two-door models, the value-oriented Cavalier should continue to sell well, especially now that such fea- tures as dual airbags and ABS are standard, (Chevy says that the Cavalier is the lowest priced vehicle , JAYLOREAOTIVE, SERVICE LTD, in Canada with standard dual airbags and anti-lock brakes). On the truck side, Chevrolet has introduced a re-vamped Blazer 4X4 sport utility. Smoother, quieter, roomier, and more efficient than before, the Blazer promises to cap- ture more audiences and win back customers from such best sellers as Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer. Pontiac division has plenty in store for 1995 as well. The Pontiac Sunbird has been replaced by a new model called the Sunfire, which is basically identical to the Cavalier except for a more radical — and expressive — styling inside and out. Pontiac’s little runabout, the Firefly, is all-new this year. The Firefly and its identical twin, the Geo Metro. enter the fiercely com- petitive small car market with a big- ger body and a more refined power- train. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder and 1.3-litre four-cylinder engines con- tinue to power the fuel efficient micro cars. The luxury makers Oldsmobile and Buick have been busy in the past few months with the early debut of the all-new Olds Aurora and Buick Riviera coupe, both based on the newly engineered platform that boasts an extraordinary level of stiff- - ness und rigidity. Powered by a Northstar 4.0-litre dual cam V-8 engine and equipped with a host of features like traction control and dual-zone climate con- trol, the Aurora is making some competitors nervous with a surpris- ingly low price (the base price is $41,520). Its futuristic styling and almost German-like solidity, give Oldsmobile a new edge in the luxury car segment. The Riviera shows off its own unique body styling reminiscent of some concept cars shown in the past. With fluid, swoopy lines and a Jaguar-like tail, the Riviera brings an interesting twist to the world of lux- ury cars. Priced at $38,000, the gor- geously s.yled, 225-horsepower car is expected to appeal to American car buyers who are tired of conserv- ative designs but don’t want to give up a silky ride and whisper-quiet cabin. Last, but not least, GM’s European partner Saab introduces a convertible version of the highly successful 900 series model. With a 70% stiffer body and electrically- powered top, the 900 roadster strengthens Suab’s already proven seputation for building durable, innovative vehicles. No doubt, this should be an excit- ing year for the Gener}.
