Kevin Gillies INQUIRING REPORTER LAST WEEKEND approximately 5,000 rallied on the lawn of the Parliament to show their displeasure over Justice Minister Alan Rock’s proposed legisiation on gun controls. The bill is expected to address three issues: legal registration of all firearms by their owners, tighter checks at border crossings into Canada from the United States and stiffer penalties for people convicted of any offence involving a firearm. It has been estimated that six million guns are legally owned in Canada. Hunters and collectors believe that registration of all rifles or guns would be costly to Canadian taxpayers, could lead to an outright ban on all guns and wrengly fingers them as being responsibte for crime involving guns. Many of them believe proper enforcement of existing laws with stiffer penal- ties for those using a gun to execute a crime would suffice. Supporters of the bill believe forced registration of all guns will make it easier te track a gun’s origin and make it more difficult for them to fall into the wrong hands. North Shore MPs are already receiving community feedback on the bill. Are you in favor of increased gun contro] measures? Paul Miller Nicola Lee Steve Worger Novth Vancouver 1 guess so.
