The “Dymkovo” folk-art fea- tures commissioned pieces by the leading Dymkovo artist of today. Whistling was thought to be magic and the Whistle Feast was used to keep away evil and to seek protection of people and crops. These brightly painted clay fig- urines are whimsical and very styl- ized. At one point, mass-produced plaster almost destroyed this art form and only one woman during World War I carried on the tradi- tion. Recognizing that this was an endangered art form, the govern- ment provided aid and protection so that today a Limited number of pieces are produced and allowed out of the country. Museums and private collectors seek Dymkovo as fine examples ef true folk art and expressions of life in another Hime. Wooden figurines also have a very lengthy tradition in Russia. Originally made by woodsmen and townspeople, they depict everyday people in beautifully ren- dered styles. They also illustrate fantasy and humorous scenes of bears and rabbits involved in human activities — playing cards. cutting wood or playing bull. The Master Carvers have elevat- ed this craft into a refined art form. Some pieces have heads that nod, others have levers that, when pushed, cause the figures’ arms, legs or heads to move about.
