windows of their rooms without
any discomfort from solar heating
while the hotel management saves
energy with a new cooling system.
In the past the hotel cooling
plant has operated for up to 10
months a year to provide ais con-
ditioning to the guest rooms. The

new Power Smart system uses a
phate frame heat exchanger that
vets cnough ‘free cooling’? from
the hotel's cooling tower to keep
the guest rooms comfortable
without operating the large com-
pressor,

Bill Wells, the hotel’s engineer,
said these days the new system is
carrying the buik of the cooling
load for the 347-room hotel. ‘*It's
running well,’’ he said. ‘‘We used

to run the retukir cooling: system
for ezht to 10 months a year.
With che new system we're hoping
thar will drop to five tos
months a year. Most davs the
chiller doesn't even start up and
that represents a major saving to
us in electricity costs."*
Comptroller Al Rassan said sav-
ings from the new cooling system
are expected to save about $2,500
a month on the hotel’s electricity

saved to supply the annual elec-

tricity needs of 24 new B.C.
homes. B.C. Hydro provides in-
centives through its Power Smart
Building Improvement Program
for energy saving measures.

Denby said in) addition to
energy savings the shutdown of
the hotel's main chiller unit allows
ample time for maintenance work
which will reduce the possibility of
breakdowns at periods of peak air
conditioning.
