83 - Friday, Nov. 20, 1992 ~ North Shore News Opposition to seniors building proposal cancels public hearing ANOTHER WEST Van- couver seniors’ residential project has fallen by the wayside. By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer The Buron Housing Corp. pro- posal for a three-storey building on four lots in the 1400-block of Fulton Avenue, which was being planned to meet the necd for ‘taf- fordable’ housing in West Van- couver, was withdrawn after it met with opp ion from residents of the surrounding single-family neighborhood. As in previous cases, such as the West Vancouver Baptist: pro- ject proposed for the British Pro- pertics, residents were concerned about the erosion of property values and the increase in traffic in their neighborhood. In requesting a cancellation of the appplications for rezoning and a development permit, seniors advocate Bill Murdoch emphasiz- ed the growing need for afford- able seniors’ residences. ‘However, there must be a way to have property rezoned other WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL than pitting West Vancouver seniors against their petential neighbors and forcing our coun- cillors to choose between two groups of citizens," wrote Mur- doch in his letter to West Van- couver District Council. Murdoch noted that local seniors are “no Strangers 10 appointment.” «but | will continue trying to locate property that is acceptable to seniors’ needs and at the same time does not generate such a high level of opposition,’* he added. Murdoch had originally ap- peared before West Vancouver District Council on Nov. 9 to re- quest a Nov, 23 hearing date on the seniors’ development proposal because the option to purchase the four properties needed for the de- velopment expires on Nov. 30. Murdoch told council at the Nov. 9 meeting that he had met with area residents a couple of times and that relations had pro- gressed from open hostility to friendly opposition.
