It’s not necessarily a healthy thing,” explained Walton. He was echoing the concerns of some of the Larson parents, who had hoped their students would have a wider scope of contacts when they entered secondary schools. Instead, as theirs is the only class entering Balmoral at this time, they would continue to be educated in the same group. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer “*T would like to see our policy thought oui a little more carefully. We should wait until Braemar Elementary students come on line,”’ said Walton, who said to do otherwise would not be providing quality education. Walton proposed the Larson students enter ongoing programs in either Argyle Secondary or Hand- sworth Secondary. “I think there is an advantage for children to remain in their own area,’’ said trustee Margaret Jessup. Chairman Don Bell agreed with Walton that it would be desirable to have as large a class as possible entering Balmoral immersion, but said it would not be practical to Start the class in Handsworth, and then move future classes back to Balmoral when the Braemar stu- dents finished Grade 7. Braemar French immersion only goes up to Grade 2 so far, so there won’t be any students entering Balmoral for five years. It is the staff position that the French immersion population will become so substantial that a third secondary centre will be required. Bell concluded by directing staff to conduct a review of general policies concerning French immer- sion in the school district, with plenty of input welcomed from the local Parents For French groups.
