8 - Friday, September 4, 1992 — North Shore News MAILBOX Dog attack due to lack of guidance Dear Editor: With regard to Mr. Jaeggie’s pro- posed legal action for a dog attack on his son, ! don’t think he should consider himself entirely blameless in this matter. It goes without saying that the dog should have been contained, rather than wandering around on its own. It’s also unquestioned that the owner should have taken immediate action to learn how to handle his dog at the first sign that it was not completely under his control. But the question must be asked: why was the child allowed to ap- proach a dog unsupervised and without permission from the owner? The impulsive reaction of a child to a dog can appear quite threatening from a canine point of view. A short, unfamiliar human coming up fast with a hand out and making eye contact looks very much like an attack. The dog’s reaction will depend on its handling and personality, and how accustomed it is to kids. Some dogs would have been afraid; this one was probably responding to an imagined challenge to his dominance. Nei- ther child nor dog understood or respected the other’s body lan- guage. So while the adults argue over who was at fault, a child is traumatized and a dog is dead. If there’s a lesson to be learned from this unfortunate incident, it’s for both parents and dog owners to teach their charges how to behave in each other’s company. We love our kids and we love our dogs, but they're not neces- sarily compatible without the pa- lient instruction and vigilance of a responsible adult. Sandra Bailey Deep Cove Consider everyone's feelings Dear Editor: In response to the lifestyles ar- ticle ‘West Van man swims to the not-so-bitter end’’: **Good on ya,'’ Michael Henderson, for raising money to support the search for Michael Dunahee. ‘ What made you choose him? There are hundreds of children missing in B.C. But the reason I am writing is in regard to your quote, ‘“‘To have “a child for a period of. time and then to have it taken away — it’s worse than having a child dying at birth. It just goes on and on and on.”” What utter. rubbish. Has Michael Henderson ever lost a child, be it at birth or otherwise? At what liberty is he to say which would be worse? { have lost a child at birth, and it is painful. It does go on and on and on! If you are so concerned about people (e.g. finding Michacl Durahee), you should take into consideration everybody's feelings.
