A Caribbean Twelfth Night, Bard on the Beach, Directed by Deugias Campbell, July 1 to Sept 15. Phone 733-1910. O FOOLING, Bard on the Beach is back... Opening the 1992 season is Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, directed by theatre veteran , Douglas Campbell. it seems Campbell took thie “What you will” part of Shakepeare’s title to - heart. This production almost makes a fool of itself! Campbell sets the action in the Caribbean, repieat with colorfully indulgent costumes and Caribbe- an-inspired music and dance. It --.certainly keeps the eyes entertain- “> ed, and-it makes scene changes easier (Calypso-furniture-carrying), but it adds a sort of zany carnival feel to everything and detracts from the humanity of the comedy. Setting the play in the Caribbean : also gives costume designer Mara Gottler a chance to illustrate the themes of order and disorder in a unique way. Olivia and Orsino’s courts are suited in matador-like black and white conventional correctness, while the those who would flaunt conventionality — namely Sir Toby and Sir Andrew — stretch the strictures of clashability in a wild arrangement of colored stripes and floral tropics. Those costumes worked, but the tropical “chorus’’ costumes were too Restaurant 2t Granville Square Barbara Black THEATRE REVIEW much like a Hawaiian Punch commercial. From the opening scene, in which Orsino John Moffat) in- dulges his infatuation with Olivia with the familiar lines “ff music be the food of love, play on,” it is obvious this production capitalizes on every comic moment. John Moffat’s Orsino is not so much grand as grandstanding — affected even. He struts about in romantic ecstasy, buffing his nails, brushing his hair and sipping martinis. He’s a fool! even despite being in love. Viola comes into Orsino’s court disguised as a man, Cesario, and finds favor as his steward. She becomes Orsino’s emissary, delivering messages of love to Olivia, who tries to cloister herself frorn love out of respect to her dead father and brother. Naturally, Olivia falls in love with the mes- senger, making herself another fool for love. As Ollivia lets down her facade of self-discipline, social propriety gives in to irrationality. Merrilyn Gann finds comic elements in Bard Olivia’s character but comes close to sacrificing the character's courtly stature (and adding to the already enough buffoons on stage}. Angela Gann gives an eas- thy performance as Olivia’s woman, Maria. Next to fall is the austere steward to Olivia, Malvolio. Nor- mally the killjoy in matters, Maivolio makes a fool of himself when (due to a ruse on the part of Maria) he believes himself loved by Olivia. Christopher Gaze overindulges Malvolio and threatens the balance of the ensemble cast with his theatrics, especially in the letter-reading scene which was just too much of a show-stopper. After all, Malvofio is a fool mere- ly by virtue of his excessive pride. Sir Toby Belch (Rob Ruttan) and Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Scott Bellis) flaunt social convention by carousing into the wee hours and acting like arses. Ruttan and Bellis practically bounce off each other in their farcical scenes, of which the drinking scene is of course the ~ highlight. Bellis’ pratfalls, ridiculous hairdo {corn rows and beads) and rickety body movements were a fantastic distraction, but the grotesquery overshadowed his character's humanity and his sincere interest in Olivia. ft was more apparent of Sir Toby that he intentionally played at the fool.
