Babies get a head start with reading WEST VANCOUVER tabies are particigzating in a unique program designed to give them a head start with reading and developing lIan- guage skills. Babytime, held at West Van- couver Memorial Library, brings together one- to 18-month-old babies and their parents or caregivers for a half-hour program that introduces the babies to color- ful picture books, songs, fingerplays and movement games. Response to the first Babytime was ‘*‘overwhelmingly positive’’ said children's department head Cheryl McGregor. Nanny Sandra Foster said, “Babytime was excellent. Rachel got a real kick out of it. She especially loved the puppets, the individual attention and interacting with the other children.” At the sessions, nannies and parents learn songs and nursery rhymes that they can enjoy with their baby and discover books that are very successful with the youngest children. “It is never too early to in- troduce books, songs and word games to babies. All these activities stimu.ate the imagination and lay the foundation for acquiring lan- guage skills,” said McGregor. Registration is now being ac- cepted for the upcoming session. The program is free. Call 926-3291 . or drop by West Vancouver Me- ° morial Library, 1950 Marine Dr., . for more information.
