Earlier this year, the North Shore Winter Club voted to turn over an unused and unfinished area of its premises at 1325 East Keith Road for the exclusive use of seniors, providing the seniors themselves could find the necessary funding to finish the facility. Senior members of the club duly formed an association to under- take this project and a centre has been established which wil! cater to interests ranging from _ bridge, whist, cribbage and darts to simply socializing. On Friday, Oct. 23, John Leonard, chairman of the Seniors’ Lottery, handed over the $8,500 cheque to Don Dunphy, president of the North Shore Winter Club Seniors’ Association. Dunphy says that, with the basic materials paid for, senior volun- dream machine. teers will use their talents and skills to do all of the work in finishing the new area which is expected to open early in the new year. “*It will be a centre,’’ he says, “for those in retirement to pursue activities common to those of ad- vancing years and will do much to enrich the lifestyle of all of us who must now contend with a substan- tially diminished income.”’ It is anticipated that the funding provided by the Seniors’ Lottery will enable the North Shore Winter Club Seniors’ Association to schedule year-round programs and events for at least 300 seniors. © Since its inauguration in 1983, the Seniors’ Lottery has paid out over $1.8 million in grants, enabl- ing the members of the 328 seniors’ groups in British Colum- bia to pursue hobbies and remain active within their own com- munities. Lotteries are conducted twice a year. Tickets are currently available for prizes of $100,000, $10,000 and $5,000 to be drawn on Dec. 14. In addition there will be 150 bonus prizes of $100 each.
