I couldn’t for two reasons: first, I was at the beginning of a long journey and I was pinching pounds and pennies. Second, the things I really wanted to buy were bulky and breakable. The Jersey Potteries is right behind the Secret Garden Cafe and Royal Jersey Golf Club. They also have a showroom downtown so you don't have to go so far. 1 like the soft colors and gentle patterns. Also, the pieces are made with im- agination. What could be more useful to the hostess than a selection of attractive hor d'oeuvres dishes on a wicker tray? The tea sets are functional - stubby teapots and matching sugar and cream dishes with graceful cups. Soup tureens! How I love them but the traveller just can’t lug them home. Also look for special buys on perfume, gold jewellery and liquor - remember, Jersey is duty free. Sales are as abundant as_ liquor specials in Nevada. A bottle of Canadian Club would have cost me $4 less than the Same in a Canadian lquor store. We took a coach tour around the island. Granted, I usually hate the things but when time is short you find out things that would take a month to discover other- wise. I'm not going to give you a travelogue - go to the library u that’s what you need. It has 125 steps down from the road to the beach. And 600 going back up at the end of the day! The Portalet Inn has a well-known bar called the Tartan. Better visit that one on the way home rather than the way down. Speaking of bars, most hotels have fine ones - bul beware of some establishments. The locals call them Methodist Hotels - no liquor is served on the premises and many of them are quite remote from the village pub. Some shock toa tourist with a thirst. Also at Portelet Bay there is a German Pillbox made in- to a museum. For 10 p. you can buy a copy of the original newspaper pro- claiming the rules and regulations of the German occupation.
