A8 - Sunday, May 1, 1983 - North Shore News Sl mailbox Student work ethic eroded Dear Editor: The following letter is intended as a message to B.C. students in general and Capilano College students in particular. On leaving my office at 5:30 pm, April 12 I heard a radio broadcast including a clip of Vander Zalm's speech at the opening of a new building at Capilano College. A statement from a student representative was included. I am one of the local small businessmen Vander Zalm alluded to. My company is engaged in suineral ex- ploration in British Columbia and the Yukon and has employed from 12 to 16 geological students and new graduates every summer for a number of years. The mineral industry is presently going through an economic depression directly comparable to that of the 1930s. Our own Riding boundaries Dear Editor: We would like to correct the mistake made by our Social Credit opponent regarding the electoral boundaries of the North Van-Capilano con- stitucency. Contary to his statements made on the Cable West all- candidates phone-in show, on April 27, the CORRECT eastern boundary for this riding is St. Andrews Avenue from Esplanade up to 29th Street, and then St. Georges Avenue above that point. Maureen Simmonds Campaign Manager for Olga Kempo, NDP company Is in dire straits and is being kept in operation by injection of our own savings to tide us over until new financing can be arranged. It takes approximately $30,000 financing for each student we are able to hire for the summer. If our present financing attempt for 1983 is not rejected by F.1.R.A we expect to employ 10 geological students and graduates this summer. As a comparison I understand Eldorado Nuclear, a crown corporation, employed 92 students in 1982 and will employ 10 in 1983. They have been in operation since 1944, have never paid the taxpayer a dividend that I know of and have a debt in the order of $275,000,000. Over the years we have found the work ethic of British Columbia students to have been seriously eroded. As a result we have gradually done more and more hiring out of the province. Dunng Public schools failing us FROM PAGE A6 are very carefully screened. Private schools are not exclusively available for illustnous offspring of the rich; the increasing in- cidence of mothers (myself included) returning to part or full-trme work to assist with school fees would seem to indicate growing dissatisfaction with the deteriorating public system. Parents we know who send or want to send their children to private schools S aw share one common denominator: the desire for a return to a solid, basic education. This includes more than the vital com- prehensive classroom = in- struction in the three R’s. It means teaching _ personal restraint; inspiring — self- motivation and self- discipline; encouraging each student to do his personal best. It means the restoration of standards, and the provision of a learning environment wherein values established at home =o are reinforced, and not un- 1896 West Georgia Vancouver, B.C. 682-4044 dermined. Open till 7:00 p.m. 1982 two employees were hired from British Columbia, eleven from Ontario. When Mr. Vander Zalm asks that the local business man, and the local students, should work harder perhaps it would do well to listen for a change. If the Capilano students want more money for education then they had better increase the level of British Columbia's productivity first. As mentioned above we conduct exploration in the Yukon. We had _ never planned to do so. We were driven out of British Columbia during the N.D.P rule after 1972 and have never fully returned to B.C. If the current election goes the wrong way we will probably have to move our operations to Saskatchewan or the United States. J.C. Stephen, President J.C. Stephen Explorations Ltd.
