BULIMIA A symptom of depression? BOSTON (UPI) - Bulimia — the binge-purge’ eating syndrome affecting 2 million American women — is a form of severe depression and is being treated suc- cessfully with drugs for the first time, psychiatrists say. Harvard Medical School researchers reported Thursday an anti-depressant drug eliminated all signs of bulimia in one in every three women studied who suffered from the eating disorder, which they say has a chemical and _ hereditary basis. Ninety per cent of the women treated showed some improvement. The researchers said the illness afflicting up to 2 million American women is a form of major depression rather than an illness of a society that places too high a value on thinness. But they cautioned suf- ferers against thinking the illness can be cured in all cases with medication. “All the evidence seems to point in the same direction. Bulimia does have a biological basis and is not just due to cultural and psychological factors,” said Dr. Harrison G. Pope, who led the research team from Harvard and Mclean Hospital in suburban Belmont. Bulimia involved gorging — im some documented cases up to 3,500 calories per binge, nine times a week — then purging the sytem through vomiting and the ingestion of massive quatities of laxatives. Pope said 90 per cent of the women treated with the drug imipramine reported they binged half as frequently with the medication, while seven of 20 women were totally free of the binging one year after beginning treatment, Pope said. The women also reported they felt much better and were no longer totally preoccupied with food, said Dr. James I. Hudson, a psychopharmacologist on the team. “They described a feeling of normality which had been lost for many years and a liberation from their depression,” he said. But Pope urged caution in interpreting the results. “This is not the cure-all for bulimia,” he said. “Although 90 per cent of our patients had at least moderate im- provement, it must be pointed out only 35 per cent had compete remission of the binging. - NEWS photo Terry Peters WINNERS of a North Shore News sponsored computer and writing competition are congratulated by Faye McCrae (centre).
