Dear Editor:

I would like to
congratulate Mayor Derrick
Humphreys and the West
Vancouver council for their
wise decision to turn down
the Sagers’ application for.a
public house m Dundarave.

Would it be possible to
turn some of the Sagers’
building into a community
arts centre? Perhaps the
other half of the building
could house craft shops,
and a tea shop.

Thank you again to the
council for helping to keep
our neighborhood as sweet

‘Held in contempt’

Dear Editor:

I was present at the
council meeting on the 28th
February, 1983 where the
licensing of the proposed
Sager Neighbourhood Pub
was discussed. I could not
believe that grown adults
could take seriously the
following allegations that by
ficensing a pub they would
be “converting the citizens
of West Vancovuer into
drunken drivers mowing
down innocent school
children, and muggers and
rapers of all and sundry”.

children, and now please
remove the threat of a pub
for ever.

For such arguments to be
taken seriously is a sure
revelation of how much
contempt our elective
representatives hold us
inhabitants of the North
Shore, expecting us to
behave like irresponsible
hoodlums.

I only hope that Mr. Sager
has the courage not to give
up the fight now, not only
because a neighbourhood
pub in Dundarave would be
such an advantage as a
community centre, and a
place for relaxation, but also

to show our elected
representatives that we
despise their patronizing
paternalism.

Council's rejection of the
Sagers’ Dundarave neigh-

borhood pub = application
proves that the spectre of
prohibition still looms large
over West Vancouver. The
mayor and _ alderpersons
(save Mr. Griffiths) are not
only guilty of a miscarnage
of democracy, but worse, of
serving to perpetuate
Canada’s abuse of alcohol. |

What is badly needed is
moderation. The more than
65 per cent of Dundarave
residents who supported this
venture (by survey) gives
credence to the belief that
many of the patrons would -
be within walking distance.

direction of reshaping local
attitudes towards’ the
consumption of liquor — ina
