Hollyburn in September 1980 was turned into a primary school for 160 children from kindergarten to grade four and for 80 children in the’ French Immersion program from kindergarten (o grade two. Hollyburn Elementary School, built in 1911 as a four room elementary school, is very much in tune with the spirit of the 1980s. It has started this afall to carry out instruction either in English or students have an opportunity to mingle at recess and at lunch. Classrooms are so arranged that the French and English classrooms are side by side rather. than in completely separate parts of the building. Both groups of children participate in extra- curricular activities such as the choir. The high school French club is presenting a play written in French to the whole school during lunch- time on December 15. The French Immersion parents are part of the Hollyburn Interested Parents (HIP), the parent group. Wiliams sees Hollyburn as “a wonderful opportunity for a child to become bilingual in a_ bilingual country.” Despite its age, Hollyburn today is very much ai school for the present.
