The heaith region defines stan- dardized mortality ratio as the number of observed deaths occurring, to residents of a geo- graphic area (a health region, for example) to the number of expected deaths in that same area, based on provincial age- specific mortality rates. For death by accidental fall, ail age groups, the North Shore is the ninth lowest of 20 health regions across B.C. The standardized mortality ratio for death as a result of motor vehicle accidents is the second lowest in B.C. Meanwhile, the North Shore Health Region can lay claim to the lowest infant mor- tality rate of all B.C. health regions. The five-year stillbirth rate is 5.65 per 1,000 live births.
