Mad Pudding’s members penned
most of the tunes on their disc and
round it out with a few traditional
reels and ballads.

Meanwhile Mad Pudding’s CD
release party — it’s the place where
the girls will be kissing the plough-
man’s sons and the lads will be
chasing the ladies along the dewy
dells of Kitsilano — is set for Feb. 3
at Studio 16. 7th and Fir in
Vancouver.

Doors open at 8 p.m., the show is
at 9 p.m.. tickets are at the door for
$5.

Memphis, Upstart Sounds 1995

An absolutely fabulous compila-
tion this, the Memphis musical
melange is revealed to be a some-
what crazed dark and delicious crea-
ture.

It pays homage to Dewey
Phillips a weird hep cat who held
court at Pop Shop, a radio and TV
show broadcasted in the 1950s.

The disc includes a couple of

show out-takes
_ and then lets
loose upon the
world an odd-
ball string of
obscure and rare
tracks.
They come at
you from a
number of
directions, yet
the biues pro-
vide the deep
and rich soil. —
It comes as
pure as it can get
in the form of Moses Williams,
playing . a one-string guitar and
singing a blues traditional, Which
Way Did My Baby Go.

And then there's a way-cool
1966 instrumental riff Batarang, by
a grouj called The Avengers.

When the yearning for R&B grit
hits, a lot of us tend to reach for a
Stax artist, but this compilation
introduces an unforgettable R&B
novelty number Frank, This Is Ir by
Cliff Jackson and Jellean Delk with
The Naturals, released in the mid-
1960s on Midnight Sun Records.

There are many more roughly
brilliant nuggets — Mud Boy and
the Neutrons, Drive Inn Danny with
the Killers From Space. The
Martinis (a reference point for the
new lounge music movement, for
sure), Big Ass Truck. It’s all very
rough, intoxicating and deliciously
unseemly. Look for the companion
book ft Came From Memphis by
Robert Gordon. It's available from
Faber and Faber Publishers.
