SCOTT CALDER (Tim
Allen) is clearly an ideal can-
didate for a little Yuletide les-
son. For the primo toy sales-
man, Christmas Eve is just a
*moment to bask in the spot-
light at the company party.

His son (Eric Lloyd) and ex-wife
(Wendy Crewson) can wait. And
wait they do until the real Kris

“Kringle takes a header from
Calder’s roof that very Christmas
Eve. At his son’s urging (and at the
bidding of a contract old St. Nick
had on him), Scott dons the red suit
and climbs into the sleigh. However,
this Santy is a pale version of the
original.

Even after grumpily finishing the

rounds, taking a trip to the North -

- Pole and meeting his new pointy-
eared employees, he still can’t

; believe what has happened to him.
The next few months fix that. His

Now we all know that the trouble

‘with Christmas shows is that the

simple message is frequently
drowned in dripping sentimentality.
As well, the commercial aspect ts
placed too front and centre.

The Santa Clause has its failings
in both departments, but Disney has
found a pleasant balance with Home
Improvement’s Tim Allen as the har-
tied dad who grows into the
Christmas spirit. His hilarious
asides add just the right amount of
spice to counter the sugar content.

And as for the material goods
pushing ... just think of it as a
friendly reminder that there are only
10 shopping days left until
Christmas.
