snagged Elvis, by way of
Attractions drummer Pete
Thomas, to write an album's
~ worth of brilliant songs for her
‘1993 solo disc. The work
Thomas and Costello did for
James continued and the resuit |
panned out into a reuniun of the
» disbanded Attractions plus Nick
Lowe on Brutal Youth. ‘

try. folk, orchestral inclusive,
none of it quite rises above the
tightly-wound intensity Elvis and
the Attractions can put out when
they‘re on top of the game.

Brutal Youth manages to
essentially cheat time for diehard
fans.

The release sounds like it
should have been the album to
follow 1981's Trust, rather than
Costello's country sojourn
Almost Blue.

The moody, devastating,
hook-taden pop entity that it is
Brutal Youth comes up just this
side of perfect. This year’s inodel
is extraordinary.

What joyful. cheesy goodness
is locked into this disc! Fifteen
swinging tracks of instrumental
guitar and organ music that pays
homage to the style developed
by Surfer guitar king Dick Dale
(who apparently digs these guys
from Finland) and the Ventures.

The Cosmonauts catch a big
wave right off with their take of
the theme song from Mission
Impossible.

Psyko (Themes from Psycho
and Vertigo) will have Norman
Bates’ loving mom rattling her
bones in the basement.

The retro-futurist Fins have

nailed the kitschy essence of the

genre, evoking a simpler time
when spies ruled the world and
Sputnik looked down upon the
earth with a promising smile.
