HOUSING STARTS climbed
3.9% ‘during the third quarter,
reaching 159,000 units seasonally
adjusted at annual rate (SAAR},
Canada Mortgage and Housing
_ Corp. (CMHC) reported recently.
_- Starts activity had risen to

’. quarter of the year.

British Columbia starts reached
44,500 units SAAR, up. from
40,800 during the preceeding
quarter.

This fifth consecutive quarter of
starts activity above 40,000 units
reflects a trend of high activity
boosted by rapid population
growth. : .

As a result, starts are higher in
B.C. than Quebec or Ontario,
which have populations two or
three times as large.
