_MAILBOX Burning can help the environment Dear Editor: When driving on Marine Drive in West Vancouver last month I was appalled at the rows of piastic garbage bags lined up waiting for collection. I stopped at one house and counted them — 36 black plastic garbage bags of garden clippings! In West Vancouver the bylaw allows eight bags a week — a potential of approximately 120,000 bags a week to be dumped on someone else’s doorstep — Cache Creek or the Burns Bog which al- ready pumps between two and three million litres of leachate into local waters. Yes, some chips anc clippings do contribute to the gar- bage dump leachates. And how about the plastic bags? So 1 paid my !5 bucks for a permi!, got out my blower and burned up the equivalent of about a hundred bags of clippings and windfalls in five hours, This was a dry, very hot, forced air induced fire with very little smoke and with a practically nil effect on the en- vironment and at no cost to any- one else. Two of my neighbors came by and congratulated me on my clean fire. I am a staunch supporter of recycling, composting and con- trolled burning. The partial solu- tion is maybe too simple. Change the bylaw to one bag a week. That’s all we burners need and sometimes less. We are pro en- vironment and anti pollution. I ask that in the name of fair play you give some space and thought to the garbage problem. Place the responsibility on the in- dividual and not on our municipalities. The North Shore is a major con- tributor to the Lower Mainland garbage problem. Let’s get together and set an example for others to foliow. J3.G.
