He thinks it will take another year before the ship is finished. Seniors can beat boredom with college courses LEARNING IS considered a life- long process and many seniors, once they are out of the work force, find time hengs heavy, and would enjoy an opportunity to further their education. Special academic programs for seniors are now available at several British Columbia universities and colleges. The iatest information on these is explained by counsellors at the North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre at 1066 Roosevelt Crescent, North Van- couver, telephone 985-7138. Universities have courses throvgh their continuing studies departments with extension creclit programs. Simon Fraser University runs fall and spring courses for seniors aged 60 and over at no charge. These are run at the Harbour Cen- tre satellite campus at 515 West Hastings and at several community centres (Confederation House, Edmonds 2nd Brock House) ard, in addition, seniors may also select courses from regular offerings at the main campus cn Burnaby” Mountain. The Continuing Studies office at 291-4354 can supply additional in- formation. There is a certificate prograin in which seniors may complete 30 credit hours (normally 10 courses) of approved study and, with a minimum grade pcint average of 2.0, can receive a certificate. All these courses are tuition-free for seniors. Studeats must pur- chase their own textbooks and other supplies. Seniors get full student privileges at the university, access to all facil- ities and library cards. Students who cannot meet nor- ma! entrance requirements, such as completion of Grade 12 with sp- propriate subjects, may be admit- ted on a mature student basis. Fer registration dates and other information contect the Continu- “given ing Studies department of Simon Fraser University at the phone number mentioned above. The University of British Col- unbia has a program for seniors both in the usual credit course and in its third age learning program, There is a fee exemption for those 65 years old or over who are admitted to these courses. All of the courses are at the undergradu- ate level. Further information can be ob- . tained from the admissions office at 228-3014. Numerous British Columbia coi- leges have reduced rates in some courses for seniors. On the North Shore, Capilano College charges a flat fee of $30 per semester for seniors. This flat rate is for as many courses as the senior wishes to take. The colleges are all two-year ac- ademic, diploma-granting institu- tions at present, but it is expected that some will be expanding to in- clude full university degree gran- ting status. For Capilazo College, further information can be obtained by calling 984-4913. Registration, which started in June, carries on through September. North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre counsellors warm that some courses receive heavy registration and, since most are on a first come, first served basis, or on 2 priority standing (priority is to students in their graduating year) it is a good idea to make enquiries early.
