Mailbox Stop prejudice against bikers Dear Editor: On reading a recent edi- tion of the North Shore News, | came across a pic- ture of a teenager standing in front of a motoreyele and trailer. The title of the article read ‘‘North Van teen rides to top.”” In larger than normal print to catch the readers’ eye, the story read: ‘‘Bikers do not ali come with beards, beer bellies and bad reputa- tions." What this has to do with a 16-year-old kid riding in motocross competition is Reader Dear Editor: Last year I wrote a letter in defence of Japanese- Canadians in which 1 asked whether it was the policy of the North Shore News to promote racism. Siice then you have paid ‘an avowed racist and bigot to spew hatred from your pages three times a week. Like my letter, other viewpoints are seldom printed. 1 have long. since stopped reading the paper except for anybody's gucss. Had the boy in the picture been an East Indian wearing a turban | wonder if the ar- ticle would have started with: “Not all Sikhs have beards, beer bellies and tote bombs." [ doubt it, the Hindu community would be on your backs in no time at all. And for good reason because that statement would be blatant prejudice. A line like that would not make it past the editor to print. In reading your paper over the last several months, one thing has become perfectly elear to me. The publisher, editors, and writers of the Nosth Shore News are pre- judiced against bikers. By now you have guessed Lama biker. i have a beard, do not have a beer belly and if you mentioned my name to the RCMP, they would probably reply with ‘Steve Who?" fam not asking you to ac. cept us, to like us or even understand us. All | want is the same consideration as feels neglected Indians written by a 7th generation racist. Your disclaimer means nothing as you have no staff writers who present the other side and you consistently neglect to print anything about the brotherhood of man; the need for understanding, tolerance and caring. It's unfortunate thet your the cartoon, editorial page . i and letters to the editor. Many of my friends chuck out the whole paper, flyers and all. : On Dec. 6 you published, on your editorial page, a scurrilous attack on Native Frum is a jewel Dear Editor: Here is one of your readers who thinks of Bar-. bara Frum as a highly in- telligent, charming woman, who never fails to thank her guests. The National and -The Journal are my favorites of the day. Don’t ever ‘leave us Barbara! . This ‘‘hostile character’’ is a jewel in the crown of the CBC.
