A8& - Wednesday, June 15, 1983 - North Shore News EEE mailbox ike route ‘abominable’ Dear Editor: So “Cyclists Appal Mayor” (North Shore News, May 29). As a motorist and an amateur cyclist, I consider that his ill considered attack on cyclists must be challeng- ed. If the so-called “bike Our nuclear guilt must be purged OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER TRUDEAU It appears incredible to me that such feeble efforts are being made by the powerful men controlling the fate of the earth, to stop this ternfying arms race. As a woman and in the name of all women on earth, I desire peace and an end to this ghastly piling up of destructive weapons. To say these twin arsenals of an- mihilaton are merely for deterrence is nonsense. Human errors, due _ to Stupidity, weariness or men- tal instability, a computer er- ror, may precipitate a nuclear holocaust, destroy- ing perhaps all life on earth. You are a father having young children, yet innocent of the abysmal folly of mankind's leaders. Does their fate and the fate of all children now on earth not move you to consider better and safer ways to settle inter- national problems than this Arms Race? We the English-speaking peoples on this earth bear the guilt of having made the first atomic bombs and the terrible guilt of having used them We must purge this guilt by searching incessant ly for a way to bring peace to the world Freda Handford. West Vancouver route” were not the travesty it is, cyclists might be inclin- ed to use it or at least learn the ABCs of safely riding a bicyc:.. Sor.: motorists show no courtesy to cyclists, nor do they recognize cyclists’ right to use the roads. Perhaps many cyclists would not use the roads if West Vancouver offered a reasonable alternative. Since 1974, I have bugged West Vancouver officials about the abominable condi- uon of the bike route. My suggestions have included its simple upgrading or utilizing the sea walks as Vancouver does in Stanley Park. Their responses range from sug- gesting my forming yet another pressure group to a meeting with a West Van- couver representative. The ongoing detenoration of the Bike Route is deplorable. The route through the Ambleside por- tion is muddy, there is loose gravel, potholes, cars turn- ing into and backing out of parking spaces and wild dogs. With due respect to the Mayor's night and duty to ex- press his opinion, I suggest that he and other officials ride or walk the Bike Route to determine whether scrap- ping the signs may be the solution, even though the Parks Department budget for 1983 is more than $1,800,000. D. James Dodd West Vancouver Cyclist has his rights, too Dear Editor: I use my bicycle daily for purposes of commuting, rac- ing and recreation, and I was angered but not surprised to read in your paper of May 29 that myself and other West Van cyclists, appall Mayor Dernck Humphreys. His denigration of cyclists is typical of the attitude of the automobile public. In general, drivers are suspicious of cyclists of any ilk and regard themn as a hazard and nuisance, However, it ts really the drivers who create the pro- blem. Lack of consideration and attention on their part causes the majority of bicy- cle accidents. The three main causes of automobile bicycle collisions are drivers: - a) opening a car door into an oncoming cychst b) failing to signa) when tur ning, offen squeezing a cychst into the curb c) not notcing cychsts in everyday traffic, especially at intersections Most drivers ignore or are unaware of the fact that bicycle mders have the same mgyhts and cules of the road as motorists The rules are enforced (I myself have been ticketed for speeding on a bicycle), so the nghts must also be granted Bicycles are economical. pollution-free, health-giving machines that cause minimal road wear and no _ traffic yams. They need no gas, just leg power. It 1s obvious that cars are the real killers. Rather than criticize cyclists, Mayor Humphreys forward lo should — look facilitating use of West Van- couver streets by cyclists. More people would then feel confident enough to use their bicycles more often and cyclists could all pedal safely. Damiel Terry. West Vancouver FROWI ONE PRO TO ANOTHER.
