They represent the improved future situation after the desired response time without a fifth fire hall are shown on shaded WV By NOEL WRIGHT UPGRADING of West Vancouver's fire protection system over the next three to five years to ensure minimal response times to every corner of the municipality was formally adopted as council policy last week. The decision by council's policy and planning com- mittee followed the presentation of an 18-month fire hall location study by a committee chaired by Alderman Bob Hicks. Response times as determined by the existing road network were the main focus.of the slide presen- taton made to. council members by Senior Planner Steve Nicolls. Distance from one of the four existing fire halls (16th and Fulton, British Properties, Caulfeild and Horseshoe Bay) is not the main problem, the study indicated, but rather the nature of the West Van road network — with its winding residential side streets, and frequent dead ends caused by the many creeks. The study pinpointed seven locations at which additions or modifications to the road network would materially improve reponse times to less accessible areas. With this in mind, the study noted that a fifth fire hall would eventually be needed, probably in_ the Westmount-Cypress Bowl Road area of the Upper Levels. Projected construction cost of the fifth hall was put at $1.4 million. Additional annual operation costs were estimated at $760,000. The study also called for the reconstruction of the Tiddlycove fire hall at Caulfeild at an estimated cost of $650,000 and suggested that the Hor seshoe Bay hall — which serves developments for a number of miles along the Squamish Highway -— might eventually be relocated on the Upper Levels. On motions by Alderman Hicks council) adopted, as policy, the need for the improved road links and undertook to consider, “within a time frame of three to five years”, the con- struction of a fifth fire hall. At that time, Alderman Don Lanskail suggested, West Van should seck an improved fire rating from imsurance companies which He asked that staff should investigate that possibility. An interesting § sidelight emerging from the study was the fact that, in 1980, 40 per cent of all calls to the fire department were for the oor ves ~ Guardian Angels Housesitting Service *bonded & insured. live-in, daily house checks 926-2519 or 922-6435 (weekdays between 9-5) *‘At 5’4’’ I weighed over 200 pounds...’’ completion of the suggested new road links only. plans beefed up fire protection A3 - Sunday News, February 7, 1982 ALSO INSIDE Down in the dumps PAGE A12 resuscitator van as opposed Rockets to actual fire calls. 100 copies + tax $ 60 com- plete, money saving fine of copying servi- ces Concord Copy 101-1515 Pemberton 985-5115 LINDA MacKINNON North Vancouver Through the NORTH SHORE WEIGHT & MAINTENANCE CENTER'S private in depth counsetling | developed the motivation discipline and persistence to return to my former weight on then personalized reducing plan if your weight prodiem seems endiess {hope my achtovement will motivate you to enroll on the program that worked for me no machines ptlis Stranvous OxerCises or Vroup seaghons ) Kade 1 lachenuaer ' tor your FREE vc sates prosasure AA Ge ate vee sree rt callin Come by lodny WEICHT 985-0458 AND MAINTENANCE CENTER Sutte 101 B Lomdale Mall, 1124 Lonsdale (Near tant iiihi SN \ ~~ “ae in Russia PAGE B!
