22 - Friday, February 15, 1991 — North Shore News Construction projects create immense waste problems TREAD LIGHTLY upon the earth, we are advised, but how little we take this to heart is literally hammered home when we are faced with a staggering mound of waste after having completed a renovation or built our brand-new dream home. In the Greater Vancouver Regional District, construction and demolition waste accounts for 30 to 40 per cent of our solid waste. That translates to 500,000 to 700,000 tonnes annually, most of which is landfilled in private- ly-owned sites along the Fraser River. One study estimates that each new home produces 2.5 tonnes of waste. According to a research report commissioned by the Toronto Home Builders’ Association, the major components of the refuse are dimensional lumber (25 per cent), manufactured wood (10 per cent), drywall (15 per cent), ma- sonry and tile (12 per cent), old corrugated cardboard (10 per cent) and asphalt (six per cent). With dumping fees increasing dramatically as landfills reach ca- pacity, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of B.C. has also embarked on a study of con- struction waste management and reduction. In the meantime, there are steps that private contractors and do- it-yourselfers can take to minimize their contribution to the solid waste stream. ¢ Advertise a demolition sale in the North Shore News.
