summertime. In driveways

sponges and brushes are
resurrected from hiberna-
tion to consummate the love
affair between human be-
ings and their vehicles ...

Many people spend hours of
laborious scrubbing and wringing
to witness the rebirth of their auto
from its winter shell.

However, having the right tools
for this rewarding task makes the
entire process casier on you and
on the object of your affection.

“You might be able to drive a
nail with a wrench, but the result
is likely to be a bent nail, a
broken wrench and a_ lousy
finish,’ explains Bill Stuart,
president of a company with over
20 years of experience in the field
of automotive appearance care.

“By the same principle, you can
use whatever sponges, brushes and
towels are lying around to wash
your car, and the result may well
be a second-rate job that took
more effort, or worse, caused
damage to the car's surface.”

Washing in generally straight,
sweeping lines docs a mrore
thorough job, is faster than using
circular motions and, over time,
noticeably preserves the finish.

Stuart also suggests using two
wash mitts, designating one for
use only on lower, dirtier areas of
thecar. |

This avoids scratching the upper
portions of the car with a dirty
mitt. :

“Commonly the wheels are
hard to clean because they. get ne-
glected — and they get neglected
because they're hard to clean,’’
says Stuart.
