In fact, my colleague in the Canadian Alliance, Jim Abbott MP, in his rofe as Critic for the Solicitor General, was pur- suing the Government over “Sidewinder” as far back as November of last year. For anyone who has not yet heard of "Sidewinder", it was a two year investigation by a combined force of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the RCMP. The original report, now ofticially destroyed, is said to have identified a connection between organized crime and national security, with bridges built to some of Canada’s political parties. NOVEMBER 20, 71999 Following are excerpts from a speech Jim gave in Parliament about "Sidewinder" on November 30, 1999: "As a result of. coverage in the neu's media, I and members of the House have learned that in.1997 RCMP Cerporal. Robert Read reported a coverup of incompe- tence, negligence and corruption within DFAIT and immigration and complained of criminal misconduct by his. superiors. This related to activities that had happened in the very late eighties and early nineties in Canada's office in Hong Kong. The RCMP. did not acknowledge. that complaint. much less invesii- gate it. In January 1998, Corporal ‘Read took his documeiited ‘com- ‘plaint ? Complaints Commission. - He. was to the. RCMP . Public. : told it was the wrong venue, and. indeed it was the wrong venue. SEPTEMBER 20, 2000 Just 3 days into the latest session of Parliament, and a week before the publi- cation of Leo Knight's second article on the subject of "Sidewinder", Jim asked the following questions of the Government. Responses were provided by the Liberal Government's Parliamentary Secretary to the Solicitor Generat: Mr. Jim Abbott (KootenayColumbia, Canadian Alliance): Mr. Speaker, Sidewinder was a joint RCMP and CSIS operation that looked into the influence of organized crime and for- eign companies on Canadien compa- nies and our security. | have had an opportunity to read the report and it raises very serious concerns about Canadians‘. personal. safety, national security and foreign | influence in Canada.
