SO — Wednesday, October 27, 1999 — North Shore News Canadian tea DEEP Cove’s Steve Bush coached Canada to world waterskiing glory last month. Bush, at the helm of the national team since 1978, led the four-man, two-woman team to the world championship in Milan, Iraly. “This was one of the sweetest wins because the average age of our team is 30 and I don’t know how much fonger they will stay on the team,” said Bush. Canada beat the U.S. by an overall score of 8.170.04 to 7.952.69. France, which was try- ing to win a third consecutive crown, was third. It was Canada’s third world championship title. The ccam won in 1991 in Austria and 19932 in Singapore, breaking the U.S. strangle-- hold which began in 1940. “Our goal this year was to win it back and we did by a large margin,” Bush said. “We wanted to be the team of the nineties.” Skiers competed in four events: slalom, trick, jump and overali (a combination of best scores in each event). Jaret Llewellyn (Innisfail, Alta.) gold: tricks and jump and 2nd overall; Kreg. Liewellyn (Innisfail, Alta.) bronze: slalom and 3rd over- ali; Susi Graham (Kitchener, Ont.) silver: slalom; Drew Ross (Belleville; Ont.) 6th in slalom; Kim Demacedo (Victoria) 15th in tricks; Clint Baikie (Campbell River) Lith in jump. Bush said the U.S. team uses a computer to pick its team, but “the computer can’t tell if -the skier has heart and can go the extra for the country. The U.S. is the most dominant coun- try in water skiing but they lost every world tournament in the 790s,” — Bob Mackin Abbotsford Bumaby Coquitlam Delta ~ Maple Ridge rorth shore news SPORTS Steve Bush of Deep Cove recently coached Canada’s team to vic- tory at the world waterskiing championship in Milan, Italy.
