October 13, 1999 — North Shore News Loca students graduate from Simon Fraser MORE than 1,100 graduates marched into Simon Fraser University’s Convocation Mali on Oct. 1 as the last graduating class of the millennium. Two ceremonies celebrated their achievements. ‘The morning ceremony recognized those graduating in arts programs, while the afternoon ceremony included science, business and education graduates. Over the past 32 years, nearly 58,000 students have graduated from SEU while 170 individuals have been recognized with hon- orary degrees. Honorary degrees were conferred on SFU's own Grant Strate, an eminent Canadian dance pioneer, and now a professor emeritus in the school for contemporary arts, and John $. MacDonald, co- founder of the high tech radar satellite firm MacDonald Dettwiler & Associates. In keeping with a new wadition (since 1997), pwo graduating students also spoke at convocation. Kirsti Pirie, who received a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in Canadian studies, addressed students in the morning while Victor Grigore, who completed a bachelor of business administration degree with honours, took the stage in the afterngon. “SFU’s eighth chancellor, B.C. entrepreneur Milton Wong, was also installed during the morning ceremony.
