Introduced in May of this year, the Contour SVT is 3 high performance, limited production version of the Contour SE V6 sedan. A little background is in order. SVT stands for Special Vehicle Team, a small group of Ford engincers and design- ers who take existing Ford automobiles and trucks and modify them for street and racing purposes. SVT vehicles are sold through a limited number of authorized Ford dealerships. The SVT team can be compared to BMW’s M (Motorsports) division, a separate group responsible for the 328i-based M3 and previously, the 535i-based M5 and 635CSi- based M6. The SVT team was inspired by the SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) group that was responsible for the 1984 Mustang SVO, a tur- bocharged four-cylinder Mustang that lasted only a year. In 1993, the SVT group devel- oped the Cobra R Coupe and the F-150 Lightning pickup truck. In 1994 the Cobra convertible was introduced, and in 1995, a new 300 horsepower Cobra R Coupe was unveiled, But it wasn’t until 1996 that SVT vehicles became available on a wider basis. Ford sold over 10,000 Mustang Cobras and Cobra con- vertibles with a 305 horsepower 4.6-litre DOHC V8 engine in 1996. The Contour SVT begins with one of the best front-wheel-drive perfor- mance sedans on the market, the Contour SE V6. Developed in Europe in 1993 and known as the Mondeo, the Contour came to North America in 1995 with some styling revisions. It was updat- ed earlier this year with revised styling and some mechanical refinements. Styling differences between the 1998 SVT and SE are subtle. The SVT has a different lower front spoiler with a wider, mesh-type grille and two buiit-in fog- lights. At the sides are unique rocker panels and at the rear is a special lower valance panel with dual tipped exhausts poking through it. Inside are front sport seats with larger side bolsters for better support, and special white- faced analogue pauges. The scats, shift knob and steering wheel are covered with a unique blue perforated leather.
