IT should come as no surprise that a school that requires its stu- dents to wear uniforms should excel at the gaine of field hockey. But not even Collingweod School senior girls field hockey coach Keith Chicquen could have imag- ined the victory his team pulled off last weekend in Victoria. The . Cavatiers made Bridgeman Cup history as the first’ noa-Vancouver Island team to win the tournament in its 60-year history. The West Vancouver pri- vate school edged perennial powerhouse Cowichan Thunderbirds 2-1 in the Bridgeman Cup final. The Vancouver Island high school had won the cup the last three years in a row, and have claimed three of the last five miple-A provincial cham- pionships. Cowichan equaled the score in the second period. But just seconds afier tying the game, the Thunderbirds fell behind = 2-1 as Collingwood’s Rossi Thomas streaked down the field, dcked the goalkeeper and gave the Wesr Vancouver schoo! the lead. The Bridgeman Cup victo- ry was, in fact, the third big tournament win for che Cavs this year. In September the team won the Independent School Association Tournament at Brentweod College and a week later won its own seven-a-side tourna- ment with a 5-0 win over South Delta. Last season, the senior team placed second at the B.C. double-A champi- OCTOBER onships. Wh the Bridgeman Cup secured away in the West Vancouver school’s trophy case, 1997 has already proven to be the school’s most suc- cessful field hockey campaign. The team is now setting its sights on the B.C, double-A championships, taking place at the University of Victoria at the end of the month. The Bridgeman Cup began 60 years ago when Cmdr. Montague Bridgeman donated a silver cup to be contested by school field hockey teams.
