Building permits top $3b

GREATER VANCOUVER
Regional District (GVRD)
municipalities last year
issued building permits for
construction valued at 33.48
billion, just slightly less

than the one-year record of

$3.52 billion in 1992, the
GVRD Strategic Planning
Depart-ment reports in a
recent issue of Economic
Bulletin.

It is the sixth straight
year that permits have
exceeded $3 billion.

ing for $2.4 billion. There
were 21,307 housing starts
last year.

Commercial construc-
tion, mostly office and
retail, accounted for $424.2
million, down marginally.

There were significant
increases in Vancouver,
New Westminster and White
Rock; significant decreases
in Burnaby, Port Coquitlam
and Langley City.

Industrial activity drop-
ped from $244.1 million in
*92 to $194.4 million in *93,

with notable increases in
Coquitlam, Delta, North
Vancouver City and
Langley Township; notable
decreases in Burnaby,
Richmond and Vancouver. —

Institutional construction,
mainly hospital and educa-
tional facilities, totaled
$455.3 million.

Permits issued in New
Westminster, Port
Coquitlam, Vancouver and
White Rock were up signifi-
cantly, while in North
Vancouver District they
were down.
