Forest removal led to disinfection dilemma Dear Editor: The dilemma now facing the Greater - Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) in its effort to find a disinfectant for the metropolitan water supply that is both effective yet safe for man and fish presents a prime example of metaphorical “chickens” coming home to roost. ‘In’ May. 1990, the GVRD revealed that since the 1960s it had secretly concurred with the B.C. Ministry of Forests in a program to clear-cut block after block of the virgin forests of the North Shore watersheds, apparently without having made proper research of the impact of such drastic logging operations on their hitherto undis- turbed steep slopes. “Naturally, exposing the fragile soil of the freshly’ bared slopes to ‘new. unimpeded heavy rains caused sexcessive erosion of the soil and hence high.turbidity levels in the ' water supply. You don't need a ‘degree in forestry to grasp what that sequence ‘of.events does.to drinking water . quality: ‘Yet it obviously did not ‘occur to directors of the GVRD that in stripping the protective old- _ growth’ forest cover from the'stecp _ mountainsides, they were literally inviting future water disinfection , problems. : ‘ © The! fact that the massive very, very, tight Toot systems-of the old ‘ growtli trees had successfully fil- tered’ Vancouver’ s water supply for generations prior to the onslaught of the clear-cutting mania, was lost ona GVRD seduced by the dollars, $8 million to $10 million annually, which the sales of old- -growth logs generated, That same fact.was not-lost, however, on a panel of forestry experts set up, with GVRD approval, to examine the logging situation in the watersheds. The panel determined that the existing clear-cutting policy was putting Greater Vancouver's drink- ing water at risk and should be changed. Instead, the GVRD rec- ommended a multi-miltion-dollar water “upgrading” program to. off- Set present and future harm to the water system, but kept right on with its flawed clear-cutting policy. The result: today’s dilemma, The magnificent fir and cedar . giants of the watersheds are long gone or fast going, thanks to a civic body imbued with the white man's perennial conceit that permits him to believe, on occasion, that he can do as good a job, or a better one, ‘than nature. The old-growth forests, “lost, or about to be lost, to chain- saws, had ensured high quality water for metropolitan ‘Vancouver - for years and years. | “Tt will be interesting to see, or taste, if copious use of manmade disinfectants does as well, i Robert Pinney North Vancouver Re ader happy with Hunter Dear Editor: “ Congratulations Bob Hunter on : your clear ability to reason! “Your stance on issues relating to the: environment is a Pleasure to Why are we voting in politicians “with “short- term interests” at the expense. of our children’s liveli- “hood?
