TO ACCESS or not to access, that is the question. For some people there is only one answer, Accessibility means choice. And choice means independence. A recent North Shore News story focused on the effect that the lack of automated doors at Capilano Mall has on people with mobility impairments. Not able to enter on their own, persons in wheelchairs or scooters have to rely on passersby to hold the door open. This type of dependence is frustrating, particularly when it hap- pens ona daily basis. Sure, automated doors are expensive, but what about the higher costs of excluding members of the community? Automated doors, grab bars, wide hallways and larger print are just a few considerations that allow people with disabilities to be treated the same way as everyone else, Moreover, accessibility is also an issue with olber members of the community — seniors, parents with strollers, and pack- age-laden shoppers to name a few — not ail of whom have disabilities, but all of whom benefit. Ultimately, accessibility benefits everyone because it doesn’t exclude — if includes. Are local public places sufficiently accessible for people with disabilities? Mrs. Carter Chris Johnson Pam Horton North Vancouver In general, the North Shore has done a Jot, but there’s a long way to go. Access means more than curb ctts and wide door- ways. Automatic doors on mall entries would make places more inviting for people with disabilities. Arthur Greenslade North Vancouver | don’t really think so. f think a great deal more could be done here. Look at some of the grocery stores — if you have any kind of wheelchair you'd need to be pretty mobile to manoeuvre your way through the aisles. SURVEY TEAM | THE NORTH Shore News survey team telephoned 453 North ard West Vancouver residents to find out whether you think the North Shore is sufficiently accessible for peo- ple with disabilities. The following is a compete breakdown of survey results: North Vancouver The North Shore is alright, but some of the sidewalks are not cut. It’s alright if you go down Lonsdale, but on 3rd Street, where the buses are, it’s not done on one side. It’s hard for people with walkers or people in wheelchairs. Mo McGillivray North Vancouver No, I'd say not. I think public bathrooms could be made better with more grab bars. Heavy doors and the lack of automatic doors are a problem, too. Vancouver I don’t know a lot about what exactly is accessible, but [ would say that places on the North Shore aren't as accessible as ''ve seen in other municipalities. - DEMOGRAPHIC REAKDOWN Horseshoe Bay Dundarave/Ambleside British Properties Norgate/Pemberton Heights 30% YES NO 29% 24% 32% 16% 28% 28% 37% Capilano/Delbrook Highlands 52% 22% Lower Lonsdale 19% 38% Central and Upper Lonsdale 24% 33% Lynn Valley Blueridge/Deep Cove 38% 31% 51% 3 DON’T NO KNOW OPINION 32% 15% 46% 6% 25% 19% 20% 13% 20% 6% 38% 5% 33% - 10% W% 10% 16% 3% - TOTAL cocscsstsssesssesssesnsnses BB% 27.6% 27.6% 8.8%: ADVERTISING CORRECTION ‘EATON’S SPRING FASHION VALUE FLYER Front Cover & Page 2 Item 1D - Girls pointelle sweater price is higher than advertised, should tead: $29.99, Page 4 - “Manager” Sophia jeans, not as illustrat- Page 4 - Hollywood ‘Sasic Slues’ jeans, not as illustrated.
