seams, and colorfully wrapped
boxes were piled high from
under the tree.

No single image, in all of
my years, has been as power-
ful. But once again, this image
is marred.

How many trees were cut
down to make ali of the
wrapping paper? How much
dye was puriped into our
rivers in the process of color-
ing that paper? And how many
years will those discarded
plastic toys sit in a landfill?

After the excitement of sev-
eral weeks which would climax
on Christmas Eve, and after a
day of phone calls from my
distant relatives, Japanese in-
Struction booklets, and trying
on new underwear, came the
ultimate denouement:
Christmas dinner.

Every year my mother would
create a feast fit for royalty:
mashed potatoes, turnips, car-
rots, cauliflower, broccoli,
cranberries, home-made chili
sauce, tertieres, a giant turkey,
and every kind of Christmas
cookie known to exist.

would have us believe, it is not
yet Christmastime; never-

thinking about these questions.

And so, | guess it has been

watching certain parts of my
closet.
