Exposures’ show focuses on cultural celebrations NORTH SHORE News photographer Neil Lucente’s impressions of the recent Filip- pine elections will be on display for the next two weeks as part of a group showing at the Exposure Gallery. Entitled Means of Knowing, the exhibit focuses on images of historicai cultural celebra- tions as seen through the eyes of 20th-century photographers. Viewers will visit a small religious christening in igloolik, watch Ukranian dancers, and examine images of the native potlatch. Opening Dec. 4, the exhibit includes work by four B.C. photographers: David Nect, Robert Semeniuk, Ulli Stelzer and Lucente. The photographs represent four different points of view from artists who have had four different life experiences. Last spring Lucente returned to his home in the Phitippines when elections were in full swing. Compared with Canada, poli- tics and culture in the Philip- pines are much more closely intertwined to the point where an election is conducted like a festival; Lucente’s work cap- tures the fervor of the Filippino people on election day. For the exhibit, photojour- nalist. Semeniuk, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, Time, Newsweek and Equinox magazines, displays his impressions of Ukranian festivals.
