Harrison Ford is ‘adequate’ despite nobly intentioned film Regarding Henry ** (Paramount) Rated Mature iat the: Fsolanade, Vancouver Centre, Richmond Centre, Station Square and Gurdtord cinemas) HERE WAS a time when cigarette smoking was the height of Hollywood glamor. It’s hard to think of Bogart and Bette without envisioning a curl of smoke nearby. But no more. Ciga- rettes kill — or could even puta hole in your head. Tim Bell FILM REVIEW Take Henry Turner (Harrison Ford). Smoking is just an extension of his moral pollution. He’s a bot- tom line, slick-haired kind of lawyer who dictates on the run, leaving his secretary a smouldering buit to dispose of as a farewell. He champions corrupt, inept corporations in court, networks at parties and lectures his daughter (Mikki Allen) with a Latin phrase or two. Then one night, Henry gets his come-uppance. While buying some cigarettes, he is shot twice during a bungled robbery, once in teshness begins at TacoTime. This kinder, gentler version buys puppies, eagerly learns from his 12-year-old and rekindles the once-dead romance with his wife (Annette Bening). Slowly. he discovers what we knew ali along — he wasa nauseating, unethical! jerk. So, naturally, this Henry has dropped the Brylcremed look and he doesn't smoke. Maybe that is the result of the bullet to his frontal lobe, but! suspect it is some simplistic movie shorthand that writer letirev Abrams or director Mike Nichols concocted to designate Henry Mach Il as the new and improved model. Aiter all, they underline that brain damage was a result of blood lass and oxygen deprivation from a shoulder wound. The head shot actually caused little damage to the lawyer. (I'll resist the ob- vious joke.) tnstead let’s point cut the tine acting from Annette Bening and newcomer Mikki Allen. Harrison Ford is adequate in a role that demands little beyond blank or puzztied reactions. But overall, the movie screams “noble intentions!’’ and we need that like — well, like a hole in the head.
