62 - Wednesday, December 12, 19S0 ~ North Shore News BUSINESS Job prospects gloomy according to survey A SWING toward more uncer- tainty and less opportunity is pro- jected for the Vancouver area job market in the first months of 1991, according to the most recent Quarterly Employment Outlook Survey conducted by Manpower Temporary Services, the world’s largest temporary help service. The survey has found that 24 per cent of the employers inter- viewed are planning for an_ in- creased workforce in January, February and March, while 32 per cent expect decreases to their labor force. Another 44 per cent expect no changes. Three months ago, 33 per cent projected workforce increases while 19 per cent expected reduc- tions. Last year at this time, 41 per cent of employers surveyed said they planned to hire more people while 17 per cent expected cutbacks. Employment opportunities for the next three months ure more likely in) wholesale and retail trade, services and rublic ad- ministration. Less potential is «cen in con- struction, durable gods manufac- turing and transportation and public utilities. Across Canativ, an economic slump has impacted employers’ plans in most industries and in most cities. Only 10 per cent of over 1,500 cc:mpanies interviewed expressed inventions to add new employees. while 23 per cent anti- cipated staff reductions in the coming three months.
