A Uhinder and gentler testival?” Is festival Coordinator Gary Cristal nshing the continued ter seat ailegiance of hard cere totk MICHAEL BECKER record review festival fans by allocating a major chunk of the three-day musical binge to simple storytelling? The softening deal is done. Cristall loves storytelling. So here’s the story on this year’s 13th annual festival which is set to take place at Jericho Beach Park, july 13, 14 and 15. Expect to hear from: Brenda Won Aoki, a Utah-born storyteller who reportedly draws from her own life experiences and trom traditions around the Pacific Rim. Kate Clinton, a feminist with a sense of humor from Massachusetts. Sheila Gostick, an Ontarian who cracks up anyone within earshot and reads her lines from ink-scnb- bled arms. Sawyer Tom Hayden, a cowboy poet from Colorado. David Holt, a banjo-picking teller of tales from North Carolina. Syd Lieberman, a teller of Jewish stories. Robert Minden Ensemble, from B.C., a great found-sound quartet accompanies Minden’s magical stories. Bobby Norfolk, comes from Missouri and draws on African tradition. Buck Ramsey, 2 Texan cowboy poet. Melanie Ray, a B.C. founder of Wives’ Tales Storytellers. Mary Cvrter Sruth. a gerot trom Mars fane Music Now recently interrupted Crstall’s personal ite story tora quick chat about the festa al, Music Now: Why naked, unadul- terated verbiage? Music Now: Are cowboy poets spur-heeled fellows who choose to ride tall in the saddle while spouting iambic verse? Cristall: “There's a huge tradi- tion. } went to the high mountains of northern Nevada. And in classic West Coast tradition | was the only one there without cowboy boots. | had my Birkenstocks and it was like 30 degrees below. It was very cold. The audience was fun- damentally ranching people. Two people really impressed me, Tom Hayden and the guy who totally knocked me out is a cowboy named Buck Ramsey, who's in a wheelchair because his horse fell on him.” The musically-minded should not be disappointed by this year's lineup. Look forward to Russian singer Jeanne Bichevskaya. Cristal says she’s big in the homeland. Also watch for a strong Italian centingent and, two plucky fapa- nese women who call themselves Frank Chickens, a fabulous new- grass group hy the name of Good Ol’ Persons, Clive Gregson and Christine Collister. Tickets for the festival are avail- able through the Vancouver Folk Music Festival office at 3271 Main St., Black Swan Records, Highlife Records, Zulu Records and at all Ticketmaster locations.
