For Western Canadians it is a superb gateway into continental Europe through Schipol, an airport that works with the precision and calm of a well-oiled windmill. As Schipol is a great crossroads in KLM’s worldwide routes, many travellers see little more than the Schipol duty-free shops, while some make a foray into the city where a comfortable hotel such as the Pullman Capitool makes a cen- tral base from which to explore the city. But there is more to Holland, and the visitor who rushes on is selling himself short. On my last visit it was summer and I went to see the magnificent Delta works and the beaches and lakes of Zeeland, a magnet for European sailboarders. This time it was winter, so I took a train to the Hague, which is not the capital — Amsterdam is — but is the seat of government and home of Queen Beatrix. If trains are marvelous for see- ing the countryside, feet are for old cities. Close to the station is the Mauritshuis with its 15 Rem- brandis and the 13th century Knight’s Hall where Parliament meets. An easy stroll away is one of the toyal palaces. Across the narrow street a group of stamp collectors chat under a tree, while nearby mounted troops clatter past with a horse-drawn carriage. This is old Holland, prosperous and comfortable in the glow of the golden age of East Indiamen. Merchants who had made their fortune from Java spices built mansions on the seafront of neighboring Scheveningen, which no foreigner can pronounce. The Dutch, of course, are masters of languages, and everyone speaks English. They also like their fish, and there can hardly be a place in the world for fresher fish than the Ducdalf restaurant on the dock.
