Vernet: Band’s passion U2 ~ Rattle and Hum ***% (Paramount) Rated M (at the Stanley, Richmond Square, Lougheed Mall and Guildford Cinemas) THE TROUBLE with rock -concerts is two-fold. The performer is about the size of a raisin and the sound gives a good approximation of how a fish hears. The trouble with filmed concerts is the loss of the electricity of a live performance. Rattle and Hum, with rock’s hottest group U2, has none of these problems. Working closely with the band, Phil joanou has put together some illuminating footage that shows U2 both on and off the stage during their 1987 American tour. Shot mostly in glorious black and white, the relentlessly moving camera glides right up alongside lead singer Bono, axeman The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drum- mer Larry Mullen Jr. Brief interviews give us some in- sight 1 the musicians, showing them as down-to-earth lads who prefer to play rather than analyze their songs. When asked how their music has progressed since their set sail for the Seven with eve ———LUNCH ON THE SEVEN SEAS Every day we're serving the finest, freshest seafood (and landfood). So, if you’re doing business or pleasure or just doing lunch, LUNCH 11am - Sue OF THE last record, they laugh self- consciously, then answer by doing what they do best — blasting out their latest chart-topper, Desire. About half of the songs are new material, with the balance culled from The Joshua Tree, including With or Without You and Where the Streets Have No Name. But the real highlights occur on the side trips and with special TiM BELL film reviewer guest appearances. While in Harlem, they visit a church to per- form with a gospel choir for a moving rendition of Still Haven’t Found What I’ve Been Looking For. They also make a pilgrimage to Graceland, to root through some Elvis artifacts and to straddle the King’s Harley. But one of the most sublime moments has B.B. Perhaps what this slickly- produced film captures best is the group’s passion. They may not be the most proficient players, and their songs may have a certain sameness to them, but no one tops them for the neart and fire that they pour into their music. Thanks to the Stanley’s state-of- the-art system, Rattle and Hum looks and sounds great. Thanks to U2, it feels great. Elvis - ‘68 Comeback Special (Media) *** The King was tired of slack- brained films that just about destroyed his rock reputation. He decided the time had come to reclaim the throne. This TV special was arguably his finest perfor- mance, showing that he could rock just like in the old days. North Shore Views West Van Odeon: Gorillas in the Mist, Madame Sousatzka, Mystic .
