In recent play the Flames edged -out the Mission Pilots 4-3 Dec. 3, thrashed the Burnaby Bluehawks 11-1 Dec. 5, and then turned back the Seattle Americans 5-2 Dec. 6 to stretch their undefeated string to 16 straight wins. In pursuit of consecutive win number 14 Dec. 3, the Pilots almost became Mission Impossible for the Flames, who persevered for a 4-3 victory with Dan Payne’s -shorthanded game-winner midway through the third period and Mike Palma’s game-saving stop with 10 seconds remaining. MISSION MERCY While the Flames ran into some sharp Mission goaltending, sloppy clearing and too many giveaways - that all too often kept Palma at the mercy of Mission shooters could easily have cost Flames the game. Ken Savage, who had two goals and an assist that game, opened _the scoring five minutes into the game, converting on a pass from - Kelly Lawrence. Five minutes later, Dave Port scored on the power play from Savage and Steve Harris to put the Flames up 2-0. But with one minute remaining in the period, a Mission power-play goal made it UNBE. 2-1 at the end of the period. The teams traded goals in the second, the Pilots scoring short- handed early in the period to tie it at 2-2, and Savage replying from Harris and Lawrence to preserve the one-goal lead heading into the third period. KNOTTED SCORE The Pilots knotted the score at 3-3 eight minutes into the third period, setting the stage for Payne’s shorthanded goal at 9:17 when he snared Andrew Merilees’ clearing pass just over his own blueline and skated in for the game winner. Over the three periods, the Flames outshot the Pilots 54-49. At the North Shore Winter Club Dec. 5, Flames’ marksmen fatten- ed their scoring statistics as they exploded for 11 goals in their 11-1 drubbing of the Burnaby Bluehawks. The Bluehawks were served notice very early of the kind of night it was going to be when Merilees scored from Port just eight seconds into the game. Five minutes later, Brian Markert finished off a goal-front scramble to net what would prove to be the game winner. The Flames led 4-0 after one period, 7-1 after two, then added four unanswered goals in the third for the 11-1 final. Scorers in the game were Port with a hat trick, Lawrence with a ES CONTINUE TEN pair, and singles by Merilees, Markert, Savage, Wade Bartok, Wayne Maurice and Kevin Buhr. After killing off consecutive penalties in the first four minutes of the game, Savage opened the scoring at 6:51, followed by two more Flames goals from Payne and Scott Stirling. Seattle got on the board with less than a minute remaining for a 3-1 count after one puriod. Two minutes into the second period, Payne notched up the period’s only goal on the Flames power play.
