Sire INS aoe "SESE EAD RR On the North Shore IGHT ON T THE WATERFRON™ BISTRO AT THE LONSDALE QUAY HOTEL, 986-6111 TEN YEARS ago a night on the towa on the North Shore meant a tray of draft beer aperitif followed by some dubious Chinese-Canadian cuisine’ and Hockey Night in Canada on the big screen. But things have since improved dramatically. Taking a Table Hopping weave into the fast lane, I began a recent Friday night on the town at the Lonsdale Quay Hotel’s Waterfront Bistro. Surely affording the best harbor view of any North Shore hotel lounge,’ the Bistro attracts the > suave and the nouveau suave to its picturesque setting. For those who have never been, the Bistro offers a crash course in . current North Shore social mores. Acquaintances who once fre- - quented the more earthy hotel bars _ in jeans and sweatshirts can now be seen at the Bistro attired in dress pants and $25 haircuts. The atmosphere, which hums along to the high-volume blend of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and _ various selections of the latest in soft-rock less-talk, is upbeat and social. A good place to loosen 9- to-5 ties and vent work-a-day frustrations while taking in the beautiful city lights. GARUDA INDONESIAN CUISINE, 1301 LONSDALE AVENUE, 987-8812. Prior to Lonsdale’s, it made short work of the Cork and Vine and La Parisien. The area appears busy, but the activity is more the automotive hustle of people driving past on various errands and outings rather than any social mingling of pedes- trians taking in the area night life. Inside Garuda, the aroma of steak and baked potatoes is slowly giving way to peanut sauce and Satay beef. Decor is in transition: Indone- sian wall fixtures are mounted on French bistro wallpaper. With management loathe to upset any portion of its clientele by drifting too far into foreign Far Eastern lands, Garuda is thus far shozt:' on any distinctive at- mosphere.. . The menu’ reflects the same crisis ‘of identity. It attempts to offer a ‘ pastd-seafood-schnitzel-burger pot-pourri that is aimed at everyone and no one. The most interesting section, and one in which the restaurant naturally excels, is its Indonesian cuisine, a food alive with peppers, Asian spices and such fascinating combinations as peanut sauce and coconut milk. In order to get a quick overview of available Indonesian flavors, we tried the very reasonable ($7.95) Garuda’ Indonesian buffet. It table hopping Timothy Renshaw featured delicate chicken satays, barbecued on bamboo skewers (excellent with mildly biting peanut sauce), Ayam Opor, chicken baked in coconut sauce, and Rendang Sapi, a lovely hot beef dish. Other notables aboard the buffet trolley included lovely light, shrimp chips, the consistency of edible Styrofoam, yellow rice, and Mie Goreng, an Indonesian rendi- tion of fried noodles. Overall, it was a good feast that demanded a follow-up round. Garuda’s owner Lilly Darmadi would be well advised to concen- trate on the delights of her lively native cuisine and leave the well- worn pasta and chicken cordon bleu culinary sleepwalk to the “APPLIANCE SERVICE 920% OFF SERVICE CHARGE : WITH THIS AD_.._.. _ WASHERS, | DRYERS, “RIDGES, STOVES, DISHWASHERS ILAC SERVICE CO. 1825 Lonsdale Ave. > 987-7330 - An Exotic Safari into the Heart of Fine Indian Cuisine Live Classical Indian’ Music by Satwant & Kenneth playing Tabla & Sarod Saturday Evenings 7-11 pm : OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Rit344 Lonsdale Ave NV Spring Fever Tire Sale STEEL RADIALS from... §39,95 PASSENGER CAR EXTRA LOAD RADIALS FOR VANS AND TRUCKS a 235-75-15) from..... 589. 95 ss / 100's OF NEW & USED TIRES | 13 - Friday, March 20, 1987 - ET mass-production restaurant major- ity. .
