Paes ah haere stink 2 ALTHOUGH I have never sort, I refuse to run down whenever I spot a smoker. In Dr. Collins's opinion, there is as much nonsense dispensed about smoking as there is about South Africa. Not that I like the habit, mind you, but I've been around smokers for over 60 years and still seem to be breathing. So what’s all this stuff about “sidestream'’ smoke? As mentioned in a previous column, little Doug grew up in a house where he had to stick his head out of the window to get a breath of fresh air. I’ve toiled in newsrooms where you couldn’t see the guy sitting next to you, so dense were the clouds. In the ar- my, sergeants and other enemies of the people blew smoke in my face just for fun. In the famous watering hole, smoke issuing | from spry 80-year-olds gets in my eyes. But life goes on. So I don’t care what the Surgeon General of the United - States says about the dangers of sidestream smoke. He impresses me no more than most generals. Giving smokers a bad time is a good way of keeping himself in business. Public hysteria grows by the minute. Pompous Officials cause smokers to be cast out from public places in Vancouver, West Van, and North Van District (but _nGt, so far, from North Van Ci- ty). However, the same en- thusiasts do not try to ban AIDS carriers. That would be Fire guts suite A FIRE broke out in a North Vancouver City apartment building gutting one of the suites. A spokesman from North Van- couver City Fire Department said the tenant was away skiing at the time of the fire at 161 West 4th Street. It was detected by a neighbor around 7 a.m. Jan. 24. ‘No one was injured. The cause of the fire is not yet known. 6 month Doug Collins @ get this straight ® dragged on a weed of any the road yelling ‘‘unclean’’ discriminatory. That would be inhumané. A newsletter from the Smok- ers’ Freedom Society shows that lunacy grips the Western world in the matter of smoking as in much else. And the Scandinavians are even battier than the rest of us. A hospital in Trondheim, Norway, has taken to treating non-smokers first. That's right. If you smoke you’re told you have 30 days to give up the habit and if you don’t, your name goes to the bottom of the waiting list. Not only that, but a bloke called Torbjorn Mork says he approves of that. He's the health minister. If you ask me, anyone who says things like that deserves to have a name like Torbjorn Mork. The newsletter also shows there’s another side to the sidestream smoke propaganda put out by the surgeon general and his cronies and fellow con- spirators in Canada. Three B.C. researchers called Sterling, Collett and Sterling have produced work proving that tobacco smoke cannot be linked with diseases contracted in of- fices and buildings. Tobacco smoke, they claim, accounts for only two per cent of the pollu- tants in such enclosed spaces. The rest comes from air-condi- tioning, heating systems, and other blessings of modern socie- ty. They also claim that where proper ventilation is available, there is no more pollution from offices in which people are smok- ing than there is from offices where people are not smoking. This information has been published in the Journal Of Oc- cupational Medicine, but | have seen no mention of it in the media. The hot-eyed anti-smok- ing wallahs of the B.C. Medical Association seem to have ignored it, too. But they are busy work- ing themselves up into an ecstasy of righteousness. Three cheers for Sterling, Col- lett and Sterling. They’re right. 1 just know it. If they were wrong | wouldn’t be here. The newsletter points out, too, that three British researchers have also shown that the dangers of ‘‘passive smoking’? are a myth, and their findings have been published in the British Journal of Cancer. I do not deny that smoking may be bad for smokers. But if you want to die that way it’s your funeral, not mine. We now have nuclear-free zones and smoking-free zones, and if this goes on this way we may also have booze-free zones and butter-free zones and bacon-free zones. People-free zones too, probably, seeing as how most of us will have cut out throats.
