By TIMOTHY RENSI ” News Reporter The debate, which took place Nov. 22 at Burnaby South Senior Secondary, involved 24 two- member debating teams from various Lower Mainland schools, including four from Hillside. The Grade 10 Hillside students were competing against four other teams in the competition's preparatory division. Debate subject was, ‘Should stricter penalties be imposed on drinking drivers?”’ In four debating rounds, teams were required to argue twice from the negative and twice from the positive side of the issue. After all vocal dust had setiled, the Hillside team of Rouzbeh Pirouz and Fraser Moore emerged as overall winners in the preparatory division, while the team of Phil Howard and Chris Monahan finished third. In addition, Pirouz, 14, was judged the best overall debater in his team’s division. “It was a lot of fun,”’ Pirouz said Wednesday, ‘‘but a little tough to argue against stricter penalties.’ Coordinator for Hillside’s bac- calaureate program Marion Langdale said the school's showing was outstanding, ‘‘especially con- sidering it’s the first year Hillside has offered the (baccalaureate) program and it’s their (the stu- dents’) first competition.”’ Hillside is currently the only North Shore school offering Inter- national Baccalaureate and has 65 Grade 10 students this year. Langdale said the program, which originated in England dur- ing the ‘60s, is designed to challenge and enrich highly motivated, talented students. The curriculum was developed by England’s Oxford University. Following the preparatory bac- calaureate year, the two classes of SSS SSS “S SSSSEN (most cars & light trucks) Hillside students will graduate to the two-year International Bac- calaureate program through Grades 11 and 12 and study English, a second language, a study of man, science, philosophy, mathematics and such extra-cur- ricular subjects as sport or music, Each must also complete a research paper over the two years. Langdale added that students not wanting to take the full bac- calaureate program can take a mixture of baccalaureate and regu- lar courses. “Sure it's more challenging,” Pirouz said. ‘‘The math is especial- fy hard, but it’s also more interest- ing.** POUR: STUDENTS: from Hillside Secondary: School won | NEWS photc Mike Wakelleld COMPANY COMING FOR CHRISTMAS?
