By NANCY WEATHERLEY And since the whole story is told through song, the musical currently on stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre promises an evening of strained ears. The show bursts with life as the travelling company sing and dance their way through the glamorous tragedy that is Evita, Based on the life of Eva Peron, who came from the streets to become the first lady of Argentina, only to die of cancer in her 30's, Evita is a typical Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber interspersing of sad truths and catchy patter songs. Florence Lacey as Eva, and R. Michael Baker as Che Guevera take turus upStaging cach other. She pleading her case as a heroine of the people; he alternatively in the play and outside as narrator always pointing out the ugly side of Politics. And it is a political play, with broad suggestions about the seduction inherent in politics. This version is cleverly staged and choreographed, the stage always seeming as crowded and bustling as a Street in Buenos Aires. The high point is predic- tably Lacey’s emotional rendering of Don’t Cry for me Argentina, which she ‘sings at the high point of her career, unknowingly for- shadowing her early end. Evita continues at the Queen E. until August 25. BOP LIVES ON WITH ROCK ANGELS THE ROCK ANGELS will be beating their wings to the immortal rhythms of traditional rock and roll at Holidays August 20 to 24. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW The former creative nucleus at the heart of the Bopcats, Canada’s rockabil- ly revivalists, Jack De Keyzer, lead vocals, guitar, Teddy Fury, drums, and Zeke Rivers, bass guitar stuck together after that popular band's demise to carry on as the Rock Angels. ‘*When everybody jumped on that rockabilly baid- wagon after the Stray Cats made it, they jumped on the Bopcats,’’ explains De Keyzer, ‘‘we were together before those guys, but their success finished us off. We just got tired of being a rockabilly revival band.’’ Bopcats’ lead singer Son- ny Baker was first to feel the claustrophohia of a stan- ding-room-only genre bandwagon and the confines of singing one style of music. He left to start another band, while the re- maining Bopcats packed up their doghouse bass, rebel yells and jellyroll haircuts and regrouped. Though the Bopeats re- tained a loyal following, De Keyzer says it was time for a much needed change, time to stretch out musically: *‘We decided to start all over again with a new name and a clean slate."* The Rock Angels set KITCHEN & BATHROOM REMODELLING Company arriving for Expo 86?
